CommUnityCare launches foster care health program in Austin after state designation

CommUnityCare Health Centers is rolling out a new program to support foster children and their families in Central Texas, following a state designation that recognizes the organization as a Foster Care Center of Excellence. The designation, awarded by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, allows the community health network to offer expanded medical and behavioral health services specifically tailored to children in the foster system.

The program aims to address the unique health challenges faced by foster youth, who often experience gaps in care due to frequent moves and inconsistent access to providers. CommUnityCare will provide comprehensive primary care, mental health counseling, and care coordination to ensure children receive consistent treatment. The initiative also includes support for foster parents and biological families, helping them navigate the health system and access resources like developmental screenings and trauma-informed therapy.

Officials say the program is designed to reduce emergency room visits and hospitalizations by creating a medical home for each child. The center will work closely with child welfare agencies to track health records and schedule appointments, minimizing disruptions when a child changes placements. The launch comes as Texas continues to see high numbers of children in foster care, with advocates calling for more specialized health services.

CommUnityCare plans to serve hundreds of children through the program in its first year, with services available at multiple clinic locations across Travis County. The organization is also training staff to recognize signs of trauma and provide culturally competent care.
