Former Murton doctor's farm aiming to boost health and wellbeing

Former Murton doctor's farm aiming to boost health and wellbeing

A former GP from Murton in County Durham has swapped her stethoscope for a shovel, launching a new farm project designed to improve community health through food and the natural environment. Dr. Sarah Thompson, who spent over a decade in general practice, says the idea was born from witnessing the limitations of traditional medicine in tackling long-term health issues.

The farm, located on the outskirts of the village, is not a conventional agricultural business. Instead, it focuses on growing organic vegetables, running workshops on nutrition, and offering spaces for people to engage with nature. Dr. Thompson believes that access to fresh, healthy food and time spent outdoors can have a profound impact on both physical and mental wellbeing.

"We know that diet and lifestyle are huge factors in conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and anxiety," she explained. "But prescribing a pill often feels like a sticking plaster. This project is about getting to the root of the problem by giving people the tools and the environment to make lasting changes."

The site includes a community garden, a small orchard, and a teaching kitchen. Local volunteers are already helping with planting and harvesting, and the first batch of produce is expected to be distributed to families in need later this summer. Dr. Thompson has also partnered with local schools to offer outdoor learning sessions.

While she acknowledges that the venture is a significant shift from her medical career, she says the goal remains the same: to help people live healthier, happier lives. The farm is currently funded through small grants and donations, with plans to become self-sustaining through a veg box scheme and paid workshops in the future.
