The five Native Hawaiian Health Care Systems, along with the coordinating organization Papa Ola Lokahi, are set to receive close to 25 million dollars in new federal funding. The money comes from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, as announced by U.S. Senator Brian Schatz of Hawaii.
This funding is meant to support health care programs and services specifically designed for Native Hawaiians. The five health care systems operate across the state, providing medical, dental, and behavioral health services to communities that often face higher rates of chronic illness and limited access to care. Papa Ola Lokahi acts as the central coordinating body, helping to align these services and improve overall health outcomes.
Senator Schatz highlighted the importance of the investment, noting that it will help these organizations continue their work and expand their reach. The nearly 25 million dollars will go toward operational costs, staffing, and community health initiatives. For many Native Hawaiian families, these clinics serve as a primary source of medical care, especially in rural areas where hospitals are far away. The funding is expected to make a real difference in closing health disparities that have persisted for generations.
