Carson City Health and Human Services (CCHHS) has confirmed a case of hantavirus in Lyon County involving a male patient over the age of 50. This marks the first reported case of hantavirus in the area, prompting health officials to take immediate action to investigate the circumstances surrounding the infection.
Hantavirus is primarily transmitted to humans through contact with the droppings, urine, or saliva of infected rodents, particularly deer mice. Symptoms of the virus can include fever, muscle aches, and fatigue, which may progress to more severe respiratory issues. Given the potential severity of the illness, health officials are urging residents to be vigilant about rodent control and to take precautions when cleaning areas where rodents may have been present.
CCHHS is actively working to trace the source of the infection and educate the community about preventive measures. Residents are encouraged to report any sightings of rodents and to seek medical attention if they experience symptoms related to hantavirus. Public health officials emphasize the importance of awareness and preparedness in combating this serious health threat.
