SAN ANTONIO - Mental health experts and local leaders are raising alarms after Laurel Ridge Treatment Center eliminated hundreds of psychiatric beds in Bexar County, leaving a significant gap in care with no immediate solution in sight.
The facility, one of the largest providers of inpatient mental health services in the region, reduced its bed count by more than 200. The cuts come at a time when demand for psychiatric care is already high, and emergency rooms across the county report seeing more patients in crisis with nowhere to go.
Officials say the reduction will likely strain an already overburdened system. Patients who would have been admitted for stabilization may now face longer waits or be turned away, increasing the risk of deterioration or hospitalization in more costly settings.
County leaders have acknowledged the problem but have not announced a concrete plan to replace the lost capacity. Some advocates are calling for a coordinated response involving state funding, mobile crisis teams, and expanded outpatient services. Without immediate action, they warn, the gap in care could lead to more people cycling through jails or emergency rooms instead of receiving proper treatment.
The situation has also raised questions about the broader trend of psychiatric bed closures across Texas. As private facilities shift resources or close units, public systems are left to absorb the demand with limited funding and staffing.
For now, families and providers are left waiting for a plan that has not yet arrived.
