The St. Clair County Health Department has confirmed the first local case of salmonella tied to a growing multistate outbreak. Officials announced the finding on Tuesday, urging residents to take precautions as investigators work to trace the source of the illness.
The patient, whose identity has not been released, is recovering at home. Health department staff are conducting interviews to determine what the individual ate or came into contact with before falling ill. While the exact source of the outbreak remains under investigation, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has linked similar cases across several states to contaminated food products.
Salmonella infection typically causes diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. Symptoms usually appear six hours to six days after exposure and can last up to a week. Young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for severe illness.
Local health officials advise washing hands thoroughly after handling raw meat or eggs, cooking foods to safe internal temperatures, and avoiding cross-contamination in the kitchen. Anyone experiencing severe symptoms should contact their healthcare provider.
The St. Clair County Health Department continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
