New data from global health organizations reveals that approximately 970 million people across the globe are currently living with a mental disorder. That is roughly one in every eight individuals, making mental health one of the most widespread yet underfunded areas of public health. The numbers also show a stark reality: one person dies by suicide every 43 seconds, totaling more than 700,000 deaths per year.
Anxiety disorders top the list, affecting an estimated 301 million people, including 58 million children and adolescents. Depression follows closely, impacting about 280 million people worldwide. These two conditions alone account for a significant share of the global disease burden, often co-occurring and worsening each other's effects. Bipolar disorder affects around 40 million people, while schizophrenia touches roughly 24 million. Eating disorders, though less common, have seen rising rates, particularly among young women.
The World Health Organization notes that mental disorders often emerge early in life, with half of all cases beginning by age 14. Yet treatment gaps remain enormous. In low-income countries, fewer than one in ten people with a mental health condition receive any form of care. Stigma, lack of trained professionals, and insufficient funding all contribute to this gap. Globally, countries spend on average less than 2 percent of their health budgets on mental health.
The economic toll is also staggering. Depression and anxiety alone cost the global economy an estimated one trillion dollars each year in lost productivity. The COVID-19 pandemic has only deepened the crisis, with a 25 percent increase in anxiety and depression rates reported in 2020. Experts warn that without urgent investment in accessible mental health services, these numbers will continue to climb.
