The University of North Carolina at Greensboro has unveiled a new mobile health unit designed to bring medical services directly to underserved communities. Named Minerva's Health Chariot, the vehicle will travel across eight counties in the Triad region, offering a range of healthcare options to people who may have limited access to clinics or hospitals.
The unit is funded by UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of North Carolina. It is equipped with two private exam rooms, a laboratory area, and space for telehealth consultations. Staff will provide preventive care, health screenings, immunizations, and chronic disease management. The goal is to reduce barriers like transportation, cost, and time that often keep people from seeking regular care.
UNCG officials said the mobile unit will focus on areas with high rates of uninsured residents and chronic health conditions. The university's nursing and public health programs will also use the chariot as a training site for students, giving them real-world experience in community health outreach.
The first stops are planned for Greensboro, High Point, and surrounding rural communities. Organizers hope the service will build trust and improve health outcomes over time. Minerva's Health Chariot is named after the Roman goddess of wisdom, reflecting the university's commitment to combining knowledge with practical service.
