A new report from cybersecurity consultancy Omega Systems finds that the vast majority of hospitals experienced a breakdown in service from a third-party vendor over the past twelve months. According to the analysis, 85 percent of healthcare facilities reported some form of "vendor disruption," ranging from software outages to data breaches linked to external partners. The findings paint a worrying picture of an industry that is increasingly reliant on outside technology providers but often fails to hold them accountable.
The report also highlights a troubling trend in how healthcare organizations approach their own security. Omega Systems notes that many hospitals place an excessive amount of trust in their vendors to protect patient data. This misplaced confidence leads facilities to neglect their own internal IT systems, leaving critical gaps in their defenses. As a result, most healthcare leaders now view a major cyberattack not as a possibility, but as an inevitability. The study suggests that the industry must shift its focus from simply hoping vendors are secure to actively auditing and reinforcing its own digital infrastructure. Without that change, the next disruption could be far more damaging than a simple outage.
