Residents in Maine who purchase their own health insurance through the Affordable Care Act marketplace are facing a significant financial hit next year. State regulators have approved an average premium increase of 14.8% for individual plans in 2027, a jump that will affect tens of thousands of households across the state.

The decision comes after months of review by the Maine Bureau of Insurance, which weighed requests from insurers against consumer concerns. Officials say the rate hike is driven by several factors, including rising hospital costs, higher prices for prescription drugs, and an increase in the use of medical services by enrollees. Insurers also cited ongoing uncertainty around federal subsidies and the overall cost of care as reasons for the larger-than-usual adjustment.

For a typical policyholder, the increase translates to roughly an extra $80 to $100 per month, depending on the plan tier and coverage level. While most Mainers who buy plans through the state's marketplace receive federal premium tax credits that can offset some of the cost, those who do not qualify for subsidies will feel the full weight of the hike. Advocates for healthcare consumers have voiced frustration, arguing that the increase will push coverage out of reach for some middle-income families who earn too much to qualify for assistance.

State regulators acknowledged the burden but said the approved rates were necessary to keep the market stable and ensure insurers remain willing to offer plans in Maine. The new rates take effect on January 1, 2027, and apply to all individual health plans sold both on and off the exchange.
