Residents can once again safely enjoy the scenic pond at Dorothy B. Oven Park. The Florida Department of Health in Leon County has officially rescinded its health caution regarding harmful blue-green algae toxins in the water body. The initial advisory was issued in December 2025, urging the public to avoid contact with the water.
Recent follow-up testing conducted by state environmental officials has confirmed that the algae bloom is no longer producing dangerous toxin levels. The results now indicate the water quality meets state safety standards, leading to the alert's removal.
Blue-green algae, or cyanobacteria, are a type of bacteria common in Florida's freshwater environments. Under certain conditions, they can rapidly multiply into dense blooms, some of which produce toxins harmful to humans and pets. Exposure can cause skin rashes, stomach illness, and respiratory issues.
While the immediate threat has passed, health officials remind everyone to remain vigilant. They advise the public to avoid swimming or recreating in water that appears discolored, smells unpleasant, or has visible surface scum. Pet owners should prevent their animals from drinking or entering such waters, as they are particularly vulnerable to toxins. The department will continue to monitor local water conditions.
