Health officials are scrambling to identify the source of a surge in cyclosporiasis infections, a parasitic illness known for causing severe gastrointestinal distress, including explosive diarrhea. The number of reported cases has climbed sharply in recent weeks, prompting investigations by state and federal agencies. Cyclosporiasis is typically traced back to contaminated prepackaged foods and fresh produce, such as salad mixes, herbs, and berries, which can carry the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis.
Symptoms of the infection often include watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and fatigue, and can last for weeks if left untreated. Unlike many foodborne illnesses, cyclosporiasis does not spread directly from person to person. Instead, outbreaks are linked to imported produce that has been washed with contaminated water or handled under unsanitary conditions. Officials are urging consumers to thoroughly wash all fruits and vegetables, though cooking is the only sure way to kill the parasite.
The recent spike has left many wondering which specific product is to blame. Health departments are collecting samples and interviewing patients to identify common food items consumed before symptoms appeared. In past outbreaks, contaminated cilantro, raspberries, and bagged lettuce have been implicated. While the exact source remains unknown, authorities advise anyone experiencing prolonged diarrhea to seek medical attention and request testing for Cyclospora. Treatment typically involves a course of antibiotics, which can shorten the illness and reduce the risk of complications.
