More than 27 states are now reporting cases of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic infection that causes severe gastrointestinal distress, and health officials are working urgently to trace the contaminated foods behind the outbreak. Shredded lettuce has emerged as one possible culprit, but investigators say it is highly likely that other sources are also involved. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has not yet confirmed a single food item as the definitive cause, leaving consumers on edge.
Cyclosporiasis is caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, which is typically spread through contaminated fresh produce. Symptoms include watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and fatigue, and they can last for weeks if untreated. The current outbreak has sickened dozens of people, with hospitalizations reported in several states. Health officials are interviewing patients to identify common foods eaten before they fell ill. Early data points to bagged salads and fresh herbs, but the investigation remains open.
The challenge lies in the parasite's incubation period, which can be up to two weeks. That makes it difficult for people to remember exactly what they ate. Officials are urging anyone with symptoms to see a doctor and to save any leftover food packaging for testing. Meanwhile, the FDA is conducting traceback investigations on produce shipped from multiple regions. Until the source is pinned down, consumers are advised to wash all fresh fruits and vegetables thoroughly, though even that may not remove Cyclospora entirely. The outbreak is a reminder of how quickly foodborne illnesses can spread across state lines, and how complex it is to stop them.
