The YMCA of Saginaw is giving local kids a front-row seat to the world of healthcare this summer thanks to a partnership with MyMichigan Health. The new program, embedded within the YMCA's existing summer camp, aims to spark early interest in medical careers by letting children see what happens behind the scenes at a hospital.
Instead of just hearing about doctors and nurses, campers get hands-on exposure. They tour hospital departments, try on medical gear, and ask real questions to working professionals. Organizers say the goal is to demystify healthcare and show kids that these jobs are accessible, not just something they see on television.
The partnership addresses a growing need for healthcare workers in Michigan. By reaching children at a young age, MyMichigan Health hopes to plant seeds for a future workforce that reflects the local community. Camp counselors noted that many kids are surprised by how many different roles exist, from lab technicians to respiratory therapists.
Parents have responded well to the initiative, appreciating that their children are learning about real-world opportunities while staying active and social at summer camp. The program is expected to continue in future years, with plans to expand the activities based on camper feedback. For now, the focus is on making healthcare feel familiar, exciting, and within reach for every child who attends.
