Shasta County, Kings View end behavioral health contracts, halting wellness center revival

The county had been working with Kings View, a nonprofit that provides mental health and substance use services across California, to restart the center. That facility was once a hub for social connection, skill building, and community integration. But after months of discussions, both sides agreed to walk away from the agreement, citing differences in how services should be delivered and funded.

No new timeline has been set for reopening any similar space. County officials say they are still committed to supporting mental health needs, but they have not announced a replacement plan. Kings View will continue to operate other programs in the region, but the Redding wellness center is no longer part of that effort.

People who had hoped to use the center are left without a clear option. The clubhouse model, which emphasizes member-driven activities and a sense of belonging, has been shown to help reduce hospitalizations and improve quality of life. For now, that kind of support is not available in Shasta County through this partnership.

The end of the contracts also raises questions about future collaboration between the county and outside agencies. Both sides say they remain open to working together again, but only if a shared vision can be found. For the moment, the wellness center revival is officially off the table.
