One California politician’s unexpected crusade against ultra-processed food

State Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel has quietly become one of the most aggressive food policy reformers in Sacramento, targeting the additives and processing methods that dominate American grocery shelves. In just three years, Gabriel has pushed through more food-related legislation than many lawmakers manage in a lifetime, according to supporters who see him as an unlikely champion for the cause.

Gabriel's focus is on ultra-processed foods, items stripped of natural fiber and packed with chemical stabilizers, artificial colors, and preservatives. His first major win was a ban on certain food dyes in school meals, a move that drew national attention. Since then, he has introduced bills requiring warning labels on products with high levels of added sugar and measures to restrict the use of titanium dioxide and other controversial ingredients.

The lawmaker argues that these foods are not just unhealthy but are designed to be addictive, contributing to rising rates of obesity, diabetes, and other chronic diseases. Critics, including food industry lobbyists, say his approach is heavy-handed and could lead to higher costs for consumers. They argue that personal choice, not government mandates, should guide what people eat.

Gabriel remains undeterred. He points to research linking ultra-processed diets to poor health outcomes and notes that similar regulations have been adopted in Europe and Latin America. His next target is a proposal to limit the sale of highly sweetened breakfast cereals and flavored yogurts in low-income neighborhoods, where access to fresh food is limited.

Whether his crusade will reshape California's food landscape remains to be seen, but Gabriel shows no signs of slowing down. For now, he is one of the most watched lawmakers in the state capital, and his bills are forcing both the food industry and the public to reconsider what ends up on the dinner table.
