The Buncombe County Health Department is issuing a public health alert in response to a continuing multi-school outbreak of whooping cough. Since August 12, there have been 45 reported cases of this highly contagious respiratory illness, prompting officials to take immediate action to protect the community.
Whooping cough, or pertussis, is known for causing severe coughing fits that can last for weeks. It is particularly dangerous for infants and young children, who may experience complications from the illness. The health department is urging parents to ensure that their children are up to date on vaccinations, as the DTaP vaccine is the most effective way to prevent the spread of the disease.
In light of the outbreak, health officials are encouraging anyone experiencing symptoms such as severe cough, runny nose, or fatigue to seek medical attention promptly. Community members are also advised to practice good hygiene, including frequent handwashing and covering coughs and sneezes to help contain the spread of the disease. The health department is committed to monitoring the situation closely and providing updates as necessary.
