Health officials are warning residents and travelers about a surge in toxic caterpillar sightings, as outbreaks of the venomous insects have been reported in several areas. The caterpillars, covered in fine, barbed hairs, pose a significant risk to both humans and animals upon contact. These hairs can break off easily and become airborne, leading to skin rashes, severe itching, and painful eye irritation known as conjunctivitis.
Experts explain that the reaction is caused by a toxin released from the hairs, which can also trigger allergic responses in sensitive individuals. In pets, particularly dogs, contact with the caterpillars can cause drooling, swelling of the tongue, and even breathing difficulties if the hairs are inhaled. Authorities advise avoiding direct handling of the insects and keeping pets away from infested trees or shrubs.
The outbreaks have been linked to favorable weather conditions that allowed caterpillar populations to boom. Local health departments are urging people to wear protective clothing when gardening or spending time outdoors in affected zones. If exposed, officials recommend removing the hairs with adhesive tape and washing the area with soap and water, followed by seeking medical attention if symptoms persist.
