A controversial and largely unseen practice is occurring in hospitals nationwide: placing mesh hoods over the heads of psychiatric patients. Primarily intended to prevent spitting, these hoods are employed as a protective measure for staff. However, a growing chorus of medical experts and patient advocates is sounding the alarm, labeling the practice as deeply traumatic and potentially dangerous.
Critics argue that hooding, which can restrict vision and induce feelings of suffocation, re-traumatizes vulnerable individuals, many of whom have histories of severe trauma. The experience can exacerbate agitation and feelings of powerlessness, directly counteracting therapeutic goals. Furthermore, the practice raises significant safety concerns, as it may interfere with a patient’s ability to breathe or communicate distress, especially if they are physically restrained simultaneously.
While hospitals defend its use as a last resort for safety, the tactic operates with little public oversight or standardized regulation. The ethical dilemma pits staff safety against patient dignity and mental well-being. This hidden practice underscores a critical need for reevaluating crisis protocols and investing in proven, less invasive de-escalation techniques to ensure the safety and humane treatment of all individuals in medical care.
