A health policy expert is calling out what he sees as a pattern of deflection from both the federal government and Alberta's provincial leadership. In a pointed critique, the expert highlighted four specific ways officials in Ottawa and Edmonton avoid taking direct responsibility for health system failures, leaving citizens with little more than form letters and vague promises.
The first tactic, he says, is the "forwarded for consideration" brush-off. Citizens who write to their MP or minister often receive a standard reply stating their letter has been passed along, with no timeline or commitment to action. This creates an illusion of progress while the issue quietly disappears into a bureaucratic void.
Second, both levels of government frequently blame each other. The federal side points to provincial jurisdiction, while Alberta's government cites federal funding shortfalls. The result is a circular finger-pointing game that stalls real reform.
Third, the expert notes a reliance on "studies and consultations" that never lead to concrete changes. Reports are commissioned, town halls are held, but the recommendations are shelved. This gives the appearance of engagement without accountability.
Finally, there is the "wait for the next election" strategy. Officials delay difficult decisions, hoping voters will forget or that the problem will be inherited by the next government. For Canadians struggling with long wait times, doctor shortages, and crumbling infrastructure, these tactics feel like a betrayal of democratic trust. The expert argues that without a mechanism to force direct answers, the cycle of evasion will continue.
