Residents and local leaders packed a public hearing this week to share their thoughts on the proposed merger between North Memorial Health and Sanford Health. The deal, which would combine a major Twin Cities hospital system with a large rural health network, drew both support and sharp criticism.
Supporters argued the merger could bring more resources, specialists, and financial stability to North Memorial, which has struggled in recent years. They pointed to Sanford's deep pockets and experience in rural care as a potential lifeline for patients in the northwest metro.
But opponents voiced serious concerns. Many worried about losing local control over healthcare decisions. Some said the merger could lead to higher prices and fewer choices for patients. Others questioned whether a giant out-of-state system would truly understand the needs of the community. "We don't want to become a footnote in a billion-dollar corporation," one speaker said.
The Minnesota Attorney General's office is reviewing the proposal. A final decision is expected in the coming months. For now, the debate continues over whether bigger really means better for patients in the region.
