NEW HAVEN, Conn. - A plan is moving forward to create a new court in New Haven focused entirely on behavioral health issues, according to an announcement from the state's chief justice.
The proposed court would handle cases involving individuals with mental illness or substance use disorders, aiming to connect them with treatment and support instead of traditional punishment. Supporters say the approach could reduce repeat offenses and ease the burden on the regular court system.
Chief Justice Richard A. Robinson said in a statement that the goal is to address the root causes of certain crimes. "We see too many people cycling through the system whose underlying problems are not being treated," he said. "A dedicated court can offer a more effective path."
The initiative would require funding and approval from state lawmakers. Local officials and mental health advocates have expressed support, noting that New Haven has seen rising numbers of cases tied to addiction and mental health crises. If established, the court would be one of a few such specialized courts in Connecticut.
No timeline for a vote has been set, but discussions are expected to continue in the coming months.
