T. Denny Sanford, the businessman and philanthropist whose name adorns one of the largest health systems in the Upper Midwest, has died at the age of 90. Sanford passed away peacefully, according to a statement from Sanford Health, the organization that received nearly $2 billion in donations from him over his lifetime.
Sanford made his fortune in the banking and credit card industries, but he became widely known for his massive gifts to healthcare. His donations transformed a regional medical system into Sanford Health, a sprawling network of hospitals and clinics across South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa. The money funded research, children's hospitals, and cutting-edge medical programs.
Beyond healthcare, Sanford supported education and community projects. He gave millions to universities, including a $400 million gift to the University of South Dakota's medical school, and funded initiatives focused on early childhood development. His giving was often described as quiet and strategic, aimed at solving big problems rather than seeking attention.
Sanford's death marks the end of an era for the region. His name is everywhere in Sioux Falls, from the Sanford Pentagon sports complex to the Sanford Research center. But those who worked with him say his legacy is not just in buildings. It is in the thousands of patients treated, the doctors trained, and the communities that grew because of his belief that private wealth could improve public life. No successor has been announced for his philanthropic role, but Sanford Health says his impact will continue for generations.
