After more than a decade at the helm, Carlos Migoya is stepping down as CEO of Jackson Health System, ushering in what leaders are calling a new era for Miami-Dade County's public hospital network.
Migoya, who took over in 2011 during a period of financial turmoil, is widely credited with turning around the struggling system. When he arrived, Jackson Health was facing a severe budget crisis and the threat of losing its accreditation. Under his leadership, the system stabilized its finances, expanded services, and opened new facilities, including the state-of-the-art Jackson North Medical Center.
In a recent conversation, Migoya reflected on the challenges and rewards of running one of the largest public health systems in the country. He noted that the work required not just business acumen but a deep commitment to serving the community, especially the uninsured and underinsured. He emphasized that the mission of Jackson Health goes beyond the bottom line.
The search for a new CEO is already underway. Board members say they are looking for a leader who can build on Migoya's legacy while navigating the evolving landscape of healthcare, including rising costs, workforce shortages, and the ongoing needs of a diverse and growing population.
Migoya's departure is not immediate. He has agreed to stay on until a successor is named to ensure a smooth transition. For now, he says he is proud of what the team has accomplished and confident in the future of the institution.
