Nearly half of men treated for cancer, and up to 90 percent of those treated for prostate cancer, face erectile difficulties or other forms of sexual dysfunction. Yet a significant gap remains between the prevalence of these problems and the willingness to discuss them during medical appointments. A growing number of healthcare professionals and patient advocates are now working to break the silence, arguing that sexual health is a vital part of overall recovery and quality of life.
The issue is often sidelined due to embarrassment, lack of time during consultations, or the assumption that survival is the only priority. Many men report feeling that their concerns are dismissed or that they are expected to simply accept the changes as a trade-off for being alive. However, experts emphasize that untreated sexual dysfunction can lead to depression, relationship strain, and a diminished sense of identity.
New treatment options, including medications, vacuum devices, penile implants, and pelvic floor therapy, offer realistic paths to recovery. But these solutions only work if patients feel comfortable raising the subject. Clinics are now training staff to initiate the conversation proactively, using simple screening questions. The goal is to normalize the discussion, making it clear that restoring intimacy is a legitimate and achievable part of the cancer journey. As one urologist noted, "If we can treat the cancer, we can certainly talk about what happens afterward."
