Penn State Health collected $51,742 during its second annual "Let's Get Ahead" campaign, which ran throughout April in recognition of Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Month. The initiative aimed to increase public understanding of the disease while raising funds to support patient care and research at the health system.
The campaign encouraged community members to donate directly or participate in fundraising events held across multiple Penn State Health locations. Proceeds from the effort will go toward expanding access to screening, treatment, and support services for patients battling head and neck cancers. Organizers noted that early detection remains a critical factor in improving survival rates, and the funds will help promote educational outreach on symptoms and risk factors.
Head and neck cancers account for roughly 4% of all cancer cases in the United States, with common risk factors including tobacco use, heavy alcohol consumption, and infection with human papillomavirus. The "Let's Get Ahead" campaign specifically focuses on reducing stigma around the disease and encouraging patients to seek care without delay.
This year's total exceeded the amount raised during the inaugural campaign, reflecting growing community engagement. Penn State Health plans to continue the annual effort, with hopes of expanding participation across more departments and satellite clinics in the coming years.
