A Southeast Portland metal finishing company has reached a settlement with state environmental regulators, agreeing to permanently cease its use of a hazardous chemical solvent. The decision comes after air quality monitoring revealed the company's emissions of the solvent, trichloroethylene (TCE), consistently surpassed state health risk limits.
Prolonged exposure to TCE, a degreasing agent common in industrial processes, is linked to serious health concerns. These include increased risks for certain cancers, neurological damage, and harm to the developing fetus. Regulators confirmed that emissions from the facility created potential long-term health hazards for nearby residents and workers.
Under the binding agreement, the company must immediately halt all use of TCE in its finishing operations. The settlement mandates a full transition to safer, alternative cleaning methods. State officials will oversee the decommissioning of related equipment and verify compliance. This enforcement action highlights ongoing efforts to address industrial air toxics and protect community health in residential-industrial border areas. The company faces significant penalties if it fails to adhere to the stipulated terms of the agreement.
