Endometriosis affects at least one in eight women worldwide, yet it remains widely misunderstood and underdiagnosed. The condition occurs when tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, causing chronic pain, heavy periods, and in many cases, infertility. For women hoping to start a family, this disease can become a quiet and devastating barrier.
The link between endometriosis and infertility is strong. The abnormal tissue can cause inflammation, scarring, and adhesions that block the fallopian tubes or damage the ovaries. Even mild cases may interfere with egg quality or implantation. Many women only discover they have endometriosis after struggling to conceive for years.
Experts say earlier diagnosis could change these outcomes. On average, it takes seven to ten years for a woman to receive a correct diagnosis. During that time, the disease can progress, making pregnancy harder to achieve. Simple treatments like hormonal therapy or minimally invasive surgery can remove growths and improve fertility, but only if the condition is caught in time.
Awareness is the first step. Many women dismiss severe period pain as normal, and doctors sometimes do the same. Education about symptoms and earlier referrals to specialists could help preserve fertility for thousands of women. For those dreaming of a family, early action may be the difference between hope and heartbreak.
