The final state budget has set aside a one-time allocation of $5 million for a new behavioral health pilot program on the Central Coast. The funding will support a partnership between CenCal Health and the behavioral health departments of Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties.
Officials say the money will be used to launch an initiative aimed at improving access to mental health and substance use disorder services. The pilot is designed to test new models of care coordination, with a focus on integrating physical and behavioral health treatments for Medi-Cal beneficiaries.
Local health leaders have described the investment as a critical step in addressing gaps in the region's mental health infrastructure. The Central Coast has long struggled with limited psychiatric beds and a shortage of providers, challenges that have been worsened by the pandemic.
The pilot program is expected to target high-need populations, including those with serious mental illness and individuals experiencing homelessness. By pooling resources across the two counties, the initiative aims to create a more efficient system that can respond to crises before they escalate.
While the $5 million is a one-time allocation, advocates hope the pilot will demonstrate enough success to secure ongoing funding in future budgets. Implementation details are still being finalized, but county officials anticipate launching the program within the next fiscal year.
