Health officials in Georgia are urging residents to be cautious as cases of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic infection that triggers prolonged diarrhea, continue to rise across the country. The warning comes during the peak season for the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, which is most active in Georgia during the warm summer months.
Cyclospora is typically spread through contaminated food or water, often linked to imported fresh produce like raspberries, basil, and cilantro. Symptoms usually appear about a week after ingestion and can include watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, cramping, bloating, nausea, and fatigue. In severe cases, the infection can last for weeks or even months if left untreated.
The Georgia Department of Public Health notes that while anyone can become infected, the risk is higher during the summer when people travel more and consume raw fruits and vegetables. Nationwide, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported a noticeable uptick in cyclosporiasis cases this year, following a pattern seen in previous summers.
To reduce the risk, officials recommend thoroughly washing all fresh produce under running water, even if the skin will not be eaten. They also advise avoiding untreated water, especially when traveling abroad. Anyone experiencing persistent diarrhea should see a healthcare provider, as cyclosporiasis is treatable with specific antibiotics.
The key is prevention, especially during the summer months when the parasite is most common in Georgia.
