Philadelphia heat wave prompts health warnings, outdoor adjustments

Philadelphia sweltered through another scorching day on Friday as temperatures hit 92 degrees, marking the second consecutive day in the 90s. The National Weather Service expects the heat to persist through the weekend, with highs remaining in the upper 80s to low 90s and little relief overnight.

City health officials have issued a heat health warning, urging residents to take precautions. Cooling centers have been opened across the city, and officials are advising people to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, and check on elderly neighbors and those without air conditioning.

The Philadelphia Parks and Recreation Department has adjusted outdoor programming, moving some youth sports and senior activities indoors or to shaded areas. Public pools have extended their hours to provide relief, though officials warn that heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion and heat stroke remain a serious risk.

The heat wave is part of a broader pattern affecting the Northeast, with high humidity making temperatures feel even hotter. Meteorologists say a stubborn ridge of high pressure is trapping warm air over the region, and they do not expect a significant cooldown until early next week.

For now, residents are advised to limit time outdoors, wear light clothing, and never leave children or pets in parked cars. The city's emergency management office remains on standby as the heat continues.
