The Norfolk Department of Public Health launches new Front Door platform

NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk Department of Public Health has introduced a new free platform called Front Door, aimed at helping uninsured adults in the southern part of Hampton Roads access medical care. The service officially launched on July 8.

Officials say the program is designed to remove common barriers that prevent people without insurance from getting treatment. Instead of navigating complex billing or eligibility forms, residents can simply walk in or call to connect with a primary care provider. The platform focuses on preventive care, chronic disease management, and connecting patients to specialists if needed.

The initiative targets a specific gap in the region, where many working adults earn too much to qualify for Medicaid but not enough to afford private insurance. By offering a direct entry point into the health system, the department hopes to reduce emergency room visits for non-urgent issues.

The Front Door platform does not require proof of income or residency beyond living in the service area. Staff will help patients schedule appointments and follow up on treatment plans. The health department plans to expand the program if demand proves high in the coming months.
