St. Mary’s Law students pursue public health impact through new dual degrees

In an innovative response to the complex intersection of health, law, and society, St. Mary’s University School of Law is launching new dual-degree programs designed to equip the next generation of advocates. These programs allow students to simultaneously earn a Juris Doctor alongside a Master of Public Health or a Master of Arts in Public Administration.

This interdisciplinary approach recognizes that critical public health outcomes—from pandemic preparedness and vaccine equity to environmental justice and access to care—are profoundly shaped by legislation, regulation, and legal frameworks. The curriculum is structured to provide students with a robust understanding of both the science of population health and the legal tools necessary to influence systemic change.

Graduates will be uniquely positioned for impactful careers at the confluence of these fields. Potential paths include health policy analysis, advocacy within government agencies, legal roles at healthcare institutions, or work with non-profits focused on health equity. The program emphasizes practical skills, preparing students to draft health legislation, navigate regulatory environments, and address disparities through a powerful combination of legal and public health expertise.

By breaking down traditional academic silos, St. Mary’s aims to create versatile professionals capable of tackling some of the most pressing challenges facing communities today. The initiative underscores a growing national recognition that effective public health solutions require more than medical knowledge; they demand skilled advocates who can translate policy into practice.
