City of Detroit preparing lawsuit against Riverview Health as neighbors report ongoing noise problems

Residents of Detroit's West Village neighborhood are raising fresh concerns about noise disturbances from a Riverview Health rehabilitation center on Jefferson Avenue. This time, the complaints center on the facility's HVAC system, which neighbors say has been generating disruptive sounds for weeks. The ongoing issue has prompted the City of Detroit to prepare a lawsuit against the health center, according to officials familiar with the matter.

The noise problem is not new. Locals have previously reported disturbances from the facility, including loud equipment and activity at odd hours. But the latest complaints focus on the heating and cooling units, which some residents describe as a constant, low-frequency hum that makes it difficult to sleep or enjoy time at home. One neighbor said the sound is like a "truck idling outside your window all night."

City officials have been in talks with Riverview Health to resolve the issue, but those efforts have not led to a lasting fix. The impending lawsuit aims to force the facility to address the noise through better insulation, equipment upgrades, or other measures. A spokesperson for the city declined to comment on the specifics of the legal action but confirmed that the administration is moving forward.

Riverview Health has not issued a public statement about the lawsuit or the noise complaints. The facility provides rehabilitation services and has operated in the area for years. West Village residents, many of whom have lived in the neighborhood for decades, say they just want peace and quiet. "We're not trying to shut them down," one resident said. "We just want them to be a good neighbor."

The case is expected to be filed in the coming weeks.
